Product description

If you want to bring a little more order and a touch of exotic craftsmanship into your home, Majalengka is just right for you. With its basic rectangular shape in three sizes, it is the ideal basket for magazines, books or records.

Also if you have children who often scurry around in different places and always have to have their toys with them, Majalengka will be a practical helper for you in everyday life thanks to the two handles. With the simple mixture of seagrass (upper half) and banana fiber (lower half), Majalengka blends harmoniously into any environment.

Our products are artfully crafted individual pieces. They may vary slightly in size, color and shape due to the production by hand and natural variations in materials.

Main materials: Seagrass, banana fibre

Our baskets are made from plant fibers. They therefore wonderfully smell and feel like nature.

What is usually referred to as “seagrass” by basket makers is actually not an (under) water plant, but a small, palm-like plant that is widespread on sandy beaches in the tropics of Asia. The leaves of the plants, which are often cultivated by humans, are separated, cut into strips, dried and then processed by hand.

Banana fibres are the fibres of the layered trunks of agriculturally used banana trees. The intense brown color occurs naturally when the fibres are dried under the sun for about a week. Then the individual strips are rolled into the characteristic, approximately 6 mm thick strands. Only old, dying banana trees are used for this material. This enables these crops to have a second life as a dimensionally stable and robust raw material for many handcrafted baskets here at Soeji.

Other material: Nylon thread
