Product description

This heavy, stable and high-quality basket made of carefully woven water hyacinth can be used in a wide variety of situations. Exotic indoor plants in particular go perfectly with the warm color of Balai.

The interplay of lighter and darker water hyacinth fibers makes every balai unique. The robust material hardly needs any maintenance and retains its shape even after years of use.

Our products are artfully crafted individual pieces. They may vary slightly in size, color and shape due to the production by hand and natural variations in materials.

Material: Water hyacinth

Our baskets are made from plant fibres. They therefore wonderfully smell and feel like nature.

The water hyacinth is a tropical aquatic plant that grows on rivers and lakes. It actually comes from South America, but was also introduced in Southeast Asia. There it is considered a weed because it reproduces incredibly quickly and can cover entire bodies of water with a carpet of leaves. The resulting lack of light and oxygen causes all life underwater to die, which is why the plants have to be removed regularly. In order to prepare the plants for further processing, the leaves are cut off and the thick stems are dried in the sun for three to seven days. The result is a sustainable raw material available in abundance for many wickerwork here at Soeji!
